Learning from the student's introductions
I have found it to be very helpful to allow the students to talk about themselves and what their expectations are for my courses. This is helpful because it allows me to know their skill level coming into to the course and also allows me to tweak the course if necessary to address some of their learning desires.
Tralanda,
I agree as this is one of my favorite parts of being an instructor as well. I am always amazed at the diversity of experiences that my students bring to my classes and I get to learn about.

I think this is the most valuable part of classroom engagement. It not only lightens the content for the students but for the instructor as well. I love learning about the student, it is so much fun.
Zach,
I think it is very important to get the students talking with each other and getting to know a bit about what experiences they have had. This creates a foundation upon which to build throughout the course.

Having the students introduce themselves also gets them to interact and engage right away, which I feel is an important aspect to their learning. While it may be uncomfortable at first, it will help them going forward.
Brian,
I agree about the value of introductions and the use of ice breakers when starting a new class. I find that these activities help to get my students settled into the class while we all learn more about each other and get comfortable with how the class is going to flow.

Just as described in the course, the introductions allow you as the instructor to get a feeling for the students levels coming in to the course along with some background, and it helps to start the formation of a cohesive class that works together and helps each other. Some students are reluctant to share but once begun many fears are alleviated and the class proceeds smoothly
Suzelle,
I like this time when starting a new class because it is fun and relaxing for students and lets everyone have a chance to get to know each other. Also, I learn so much about the students during this introductory time.

It is very helpful to ask the students to introduce themselves the first day of class. The instructor will have more information about their background. So it will be easier to manage the class and to assist the students to succeed in their learning experience.
Rico,
I think this is a great way to get students to start thinking about the outcomes they want from their effort in class. The more they personalize the outcomes the more value they associate with the course.
