How to identify learners
It can be challenging to add the variety of learning styles into the classroom on a weekly basis. I would love some ideas for those that need notes, written words or other visual clues.
I agree, identifying the student's different learning styles and then systematically mixing them into groups for discussion and projects always seems to have strong results.
Thao,
If you do a Google search for learning styles you will come up with a host of sites to explore. The reason I suggest that you do the search yourself is that you will see the different options that are available to you. Some of the assessments take more time than others, some are complicated, and some will not be the assessment that you are wanting to give so you can do a bit of exploring and quickly come up with one that will work for you.

Is there any sort of quiz that can be given on the first day to identify what type of learner each individual student is?
Cary,
Yes, it will. This way students get to work within their different learning preferences.

Putting the different learning styles in groups and have them do different tasks that will enhance their learning and collaboration.
Tara,
Good variety and balance in your delivery. You are reaching the different learning preferences of your students and this is what will keep them engaged. I wish you continued success with all of your efforts.

When I have that, I use premade worksheet. They can follow along in the worksheet and it has places for notes, but the real action is me talking about the worksheet, and the smart board. That way I cover the visual, and written learner. Most the time I make them follow my demonstration too, so that covers the 3rd type of learner. I do the worksheet because I have a lot of non English speaking students. They don't always tell you when they don't understand.
