Motivating the class

I teach the science for Massage Therapy. Some of the students have asked if they could work on me. Answer is negative. They are students, I am an instructor, and I feel uncomfortable completing an assessment on them in this field. I feel that some of the motivation is lost because of this. What can I do to compensate for this?

In my case to teach mathematics is easy and to motivate my students on the first day we do some group dynamics to enjoy math, that try to do it every day because it is a way of breaking with the patterns that are difficult mathematics. also I have different paths or ways of teaching which I have learned in my 17 years of experience.

Kim,
It is an orientation process for adult learners. Many have been out of school for a while or have never been in college before so they are trying to figure out just how to act and be successful in the course. By sharing with them clearly and concisely the course expectations a lot can be done to calm their fears and get them settled into the course.

As an instructor, I must recognize and deal with preconceived ideas and emotions that adult students may have about the duties and roles that the student and instructor will have in the classroom. To motivate the learning process in the classroom, I will continuously identify and address obstacles and barriers within the learning process, so no student will be inhibited from participating fully in the and be motivated in the classroom.

Troy,
This is how to approach the classroom/lab. You are showing your students the passion you have for your field as well as your enthusiasm for teaching about it. This is a winning combination for the student and yourself.

I make sure that the students know that the subject that we are going to talk about is something that i have alot of interest in so that they will also find interest in the same subject due to my body lanuage and my enthusiasm towards the subject @ hand.

Patrick,
I would make sure you are clear about the role you play as the learning leader and that you provide individuals upon which they can practice their skill development. This way there will be no expectations on the part of students that they can work on you so the question will not come up after a couple of class sessions.
