You don't get a second chance to make a first impression !
Erica,
Well said and something instructors really need to reflect on as they start a new class. A positive first impression is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built.

I think first impressions are extremely important because it sets the standard of how students will perceive you throughout the rest of the course. Perception is reality. Instructors must set a positive first impression that we are Professionals in our field and we expect high standards and are willing to help our students achieve it.
Uzma,
A first impression is the foundation upon which perceptions about the rest of the course is built. It needs to be a positive one so the students will look forward to future learning opportunities in the class.

Positive first impression is important because we r giving students message that we are approachable and skilled enough to help them for their career goal
This will set the tone and expectations throughout the course.
Bonnie,
Yes, it is. Time will be lost in trying to reestablish a positive setting. With planning and effort the class can get off to a good start and the build from there to the benefit of everyone.

Allison,
Like your approach and like the message you are sending to your students at the first class meeting. This sets the stage for a positive and supportive course to come.

Making a good first impression can impact the attitudes and flow of the course for the entire term. Students will remember their first impression of you and that can greatly impact which direction the class will go.
Agreed! First Impression and the TONE of the class makes all the difference. If you start off on the wrong foot, it's very hard to change their "tone" and get the most out of that class and the studnets
I believe that a positive first impression is essential to setting the tone for the class. I want the students' first impression of me to be that I am passionate, energetic, open and organized, but also that I am a professional and I am serious about the subject matter.
Jane,
Right you are. This is the foundation upon which the rest of the course is built.
Gary

The first impression sets the tone for the rest of the course. If an instructor is calm and has everything ready for the class and is greeting students at the door as they arrive, then the students will feel that the instructor believes the class is important.
Lisa,

Michele,
Your last sentence captures the essence of how we should present ourselves at the first class meeting. This forms a solid foundation of trust and then the learning can begin.

The first impression a student perceives will last throughout the entire course. If students see you in a positive light, the entire course should flow easier. Students should see you as the authority figure, the expert, but also as an approachable individual.
