Know it all

How do you handle a student that thinks he/she knows the topic better than you and maybe does?

Hi Jeff,

A good way to take care of know it all type persons in a group is to establish the rule from day one that everyone must get a chance to participate and you will control this by selecting individuals to contribute. This will give those persons who would normally not contribute in class the opportunity to do so.

Jeff,
Depends how the student displays his or her knowledge. If they constantly interrupt and talk over you then I have a talk with the student and tell them that I need them to stop the talking. I ask them to contribute only when I call on them. If that doesn't work then I break the class up into small groups for discussion so the student cannot overtake the class because I make it clear that I am the learning leader and I will be leading the discussions and questioning in these areas.
