Being prepared

It is important to have a well planned firs day in the classroom. Without a well planned outline and being over prepared the class could lose interest.

Colleen,
This is good advice for beginning instructors to remember. It is the foundation upon which first impressions are going to be formed so it needs to be well planned and presented.

I totally agree. I have learned in my 2 years teaching that planning out your introduction to your class for the first time, is just as important as your teaching lesson plans.

Extremely important to be prepared with all the material needed for the first day. It sets the tone for the whole semester. Students feel more comfortable when there are clear expectations and well explained goals, objectives for the course

Richard,
Good way to launch a new course and get everyone settled in to the class. The informal chats with students go a long way in earning their respect and showing them that you are there to support their learning and success.

I always try to be prepared with the matrial I will need for the first day and there after. I introduse myself and talk to each student one on one when they are introduing them selfs so I don't miss pronouise a name and they feel comfortble.

Success is to me, where preparation meets opportunity. Each new or returning student is an opportunity to make a difference in there life. With out proper preparation you will potentially loose the student, endangering their success and future goals

Paula,
Yes, it is. This how you set the stage for a successful course and start the development of rapport with the students. It is the foundation upon which the course is built.
