Authoritarian on first day?
Is it better to make a first impression as an authoritarian figure or is it better to be lenient because its the first attempt the students are having to take tests etc with a new teacher?

You dont want to come off as a sergeant or an enabler. A healthy balance will create a great learning environment

If possible a blend of both. You want to establish yourself as the learning leader of the class and that you experienced and prepared to teach. When the class starts due some ice breakers and introductions so everyone, including yourself can share and have some laughs together so everyone gets comfortable with each other.
