The First Day

The first day of class often creates nerves both for students and the instructor. As we have learned in the module, the first day of class, can set the tone for the rest of the course. Having some sort of game is important. This relaxes the students, provides some laughs and helps everyone get to know each other. I teach Introduction to Psychology. One of the things I do is have a discussion about what they think the course is about. Often many students do not understand why they have to take the course, but after this discussion they are able to better understand how they use the topic everday.

I like the first day outline in the training, it's close to mine. When I go around the class, I ask each of them to say their name, why they are in our program and a hobby. Most of the time the students have the same interests. I think that puts their mind at ease - Knowing that they are not so different than the person sitting next to them.

the first day serves to create expectations and breack down concerns that creat barriers to learning

I like to take the time to get to know each student and solicit questions about the course. It seems to put them more at ease with each other and it lets them know that I am assesable as an instructor.

I agree the first day of class to senior nursing students was a question and answer session for me. Worked perfectly.
