knowing

You should know what you teach.

Hi Jovelyn,
Well said.
Gary

knowing is the key.know the topic, know the material by heart.they expect you to, after all you're a model. you're a demonstrator of experty

You have no need to tell them that you know your material. It is your job to demonstrate to them that you know what you are talking about by the way in which you present the material that you already know and by the attitude you bring upon your class.

They assume already that you know the material since you are the one that is standing in front of them talking to them. It is your responsibility to keep that by the way in which you go about your duties, your assignments, your lectures, etc.

If you have to reaffirm that you are the instructor, you are not being effective.

I found that before starting a "lecture", I will give a brief out line verbally and look to find student interest in any piece of the subject matter so that I can draw questions out of. Once the students start getting answers that they can comprehend from you as an instructor they will believe in your expertise. The beautiful part is that in answering, you just shortened the lecture and if done right you've gained all the students interest in the whole lecture. Also you have a chance to re-enforce an important piont as you come back to in in the lecture, if you draw out the right questions.

I agree,

It's more than just knowing what you teach, you have to educate them in such a way that demonstrates that you know the subject material front to back.

Hi Stu,
How to you let your students know that you know your material? So they know you know what you teach.
