yes and no

Day one i usually assign someone as a yes and assign someone to be no. That way when I ask a question and no one answers, i point to the correct answer person and they have to say yes/no. then i ask why is the answer what it is. it keeps them focused because they never know when i am going to point and they actually start to look foward to being put in the spotlight. and if they drift off i point just to see if they are paying attention.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for sharing this strategy. The great part about professional development is the sharing of best practice ideas. This is one of those.
Instructors can develop the cards for this and when the class seems to lag they can use the cards and get things going again. This is another tool for the instructional tool kit.

Excellent idea ,one thing I have tried that works on occassion is I have class participation cards. If I have a class that is a little un willing to ask questions or make comments on the material we are covering . I give out the cards 1 per student the cards are numbered and each card has a question or comment for the student to say when his/her number comes up.Like---
Coud you repeat that? or So you mean (student restates instructors point) or I understand but my buddy ( say students name to the left of you)didnt could you go over that again I even have -Is it lunch time yet? A random generator or the screen picks the numbers. Its great for a change of pace or for a new class.

I might try this but most answers in my class are more like "it depends".
Thanks though.
Cheryl

This seems like a excellent idea.I can see this working well.It will definitely get the students invovled, and also ease the tension from being the first day
