first day

The most important day of class, intro, explain tasks, grading, and acceptable behavior.

Clearly the first day is the most important. By carefully outlining student, and instructor expectations and defining the path to meet those expectations the instructor sets the tone for the entire class. This also gives the instructor the opportunity to indentify, early, those student most uncomfortable with the subject matter or classroom environment. Once indentified these obsticles to learning can be overcome, increasing the students cahnce of success.

I have to say I completely agree with Mr. Mathis. On the first day most of the students are completely overwhelmed. They feel rushed, nervous, lost, and sometimes like they are drowning. When we as instructors can show them what we expect and what they should expect it somehow relaxes them and lowers their walls so they don't get in their own way and block their learning process.

I believe that not only is this the most important day but it is also the foundation on the way the rest of the course is going to go. If you lay down the groundwork of what you expect from your students and what they can expect from you I believe this is the best way to know that there are no misunderstandings about the way the course is going to be run and what is going to be expected of the students.
