Doing homework
Since we only remember 25% of what we hear and 40% of what we read actually doing homework is very important. The more they do, correctly of course, the more they retain. Education is a participant sport not a spectator sport.
Depending on the homework assignments, students can wind up using a variety of learning strategies. All learning styles can be addressed in homework as well as in the classroom.
Very well said. The importance of well prepared homework is often overlooked. Not only is homework important but it must be good homework that really adds to the students experience.
I support students "doing homework." In fact, I provide my students with a reward for turning in completed homework. The homework reiterates the subject matter discussed in lecture.
Homework is the key to a successful education
That is great having the students research some more. Sometimes students get "lost" in the doing and forget to tie it back to the "why." My students do this with almost every assignment to demonstrate why the particular activity is important and to try and make the larger connections to the outside world as well. It is a great way to incorporate the "critical" thinking mode.
In addition to regular homework assignments, I always tell the students to complement their education with more research.
Hi Joyce,
You are exactly right but sometimes our students forget whether they are setting in the bleachers or playing the game. It is up to us to remind them that they are on the field to play and not watch.
