Hands-on training
I find when demoing a technique for massage, that most students are so caught up in the hands moving and most seem to miss out on body mechanics.
So, afterwards I have another student perform the demo as I did and I have the students only watch the body mechanics...This way the student is able to practice the motion of the hands without judgement and learns both good and bad body mechanics.
Hi Bridget,
Good point. If you can teach it then you know you have mastered the basics of the content and application. This is why I have my students do some of the demonstrations and mini-lectures. They get to share what they have learned which really helps to build their self confidence.

I believe that the best learning style is reading, application and then teaching. I was once told if I could make it to the third phase (teaching), then I was considered an expert.
Hi Wing,
Good point about learning from the students. Keen observation is critical for staying on top of the class so you can meet the needs of each student.

I think that's a very good idea and I can remember when I learned certain things from my classmates back when I was in school. But it's also important to pay attention to which student is doing the teaching and which is doing the learning. I've recalled situations where I saw students teaching other students improper techniques so I think it goes both ways.
I love hands on training, this is a great way to gain repetition and strenghten skills.
I agree that students learn from teaching the rest of the class. How many of us instructors have learned so much more on our subjects by teaching them!!!!!!
Hi Dawn,
Good use of students as resources. They as you say can learn from each other plus learn how to work with each other. All of which better prepares them for career success.

When I have the opportunity I also like to have students work in pairs to learn from each other. Each student catches onto part of the demo and can help teach students in another way.
I prefer asymmetrical stance to symmetrical stance when I am massaging.
Hands on training helps students recieved a more hands on approach of the concept.
Hi Celina,
Great idea. The repetition is good plus the students get to revisit the learning of how they do a massage looking for something different the second time through.
