Reaching Students with Different Learning Styles

I am interested in learning how instructors vary their teaching styles in one lesson particularly online to reach as many students as possible.

Hi Joseph,
You are doing a good job of reaching out to your students and engaging them in the course. Showing them that you are available and willing to help them is a great source of encouragement if they get hung up on some concept with which they need help.

I teach accounting, which I feel needs to be very interactive to be successful.

Most of my courses are in a classroom setting however two classes are hybrid classes where roughly half of each class is in the classroom and the balance on line.

My students as a rule, from beginners to advanced, have expressed a preference for classroom instruction.

Some have commented that they are personally not comfortable with accounting courses taught on line.

I try to keep all students involved or at least engaged, even if against their will at times by calling on them, especially if I think they are not focused. This extra attention seems to work as these students eventually become more engaged.

I also have office hours thoughout the week, similar to a regular business where students can visit and go over conccepts and issues.

Hi Jessica,

I too try to use a variety of teaching styles within the classroom. I also use a similar mix with homework. What has also worked for me is allowing time in class for homework. The information is fresh and they work with each other.

I try to employ a mix of lecture, small group discussions, and hands-on lab time in my classroom. The homework is a mix of reading, online quizzes, individual projects, and group projects. You quickly get a feel for where certain students are comfortable and uncomfortable.
