Tracking student comprehension during lecture
It's important that instructors do this. What are some creative ways to monitor how much students are following and comprehending lecture.
You can also have students take a mini-quiz to see if they are comprehending the material. It can be worth a few points to make sure they are trying and paying attention as well.
Rather than calling on a particular Student by name, I usually ask for a volunteer in class to tell the class what she/he has learned about the topic of discussion. Once a Student responds, then other Students will respond to the other Student's responce to express their opinions, others raise questions, and the whole class participates in the learning process. I find this approach helpful to me in assessing what my Students have learned.
This is a good idea. I will follow it during my lectures
I do the exact same thing. I always make sure to ask one student by name to answer the question. That way it keeps the other sudents from answering for them.
I like this idea. I will give it a try. Thanks!
Ask questions and if the student is unable to answer the question ask someone else in the class if they could help them with the answer.
Hi Eleanor,
There are several way. After a period of time you can put them into discussion groups and have them talk about the content that has just been covered. You can have them do a 60 second "term paper" where they list the high lights of what has just been covered. You can have them complete a "What I learned from the lecture/demo is.......... activity.
Hope this helps.
