Sharing Comprehensive and Clear Course Requirements
Why is it important to give a comprehensive and clear description of the course requirements?
By sharing a comprehensive desripition of the course and requirements students know aht is expected and what they need to do to get there
keeping on track improves a clear road map
Barbara,
Right you are because if they don't they will spend a lot of time and energy trying to figure out the course requirements and not be able to focus on the learning that needs to occur.

It is important for students to understand clearly what is going to be expected from them during the course.
The clarity of what is expected throughout the course from the student, from the instructor, during class, lab, and shop, provides a complete logistical framework for the student (class organization is provided). Therefore, they may spend their time focused upon learning rather than planning.
I totally agree with Stuart. Sharing clear and comprehensive course requirements do actually establish the expectations of the class for both the students and the instructors.
Comprehensive and clear course requirements also establishes the importance of the subject to the students education and how the subject will be of value to him or her in their educational career.

this sets the tone for the entire class - expectations - a road map to success - will assist students in their journey
It is important to give comprehensive and clear descriptions of the course requirements so students know what is expected. They won't be blind sided later. They can better prepare themselves for what is to come.
Sharon,
This is something that I have experienced with my older students so I make note taking a part of my introduction. I also use guided notes to help them capture the key points and not be overwhelmed with trying to write everything that is said down.

I enjoyed the module's suggestion to give the students tips on how to take notes throughout the course. So many adults come back to school feeling inadequate and unprepared because it has been some time since they've studied. With a bit of help, they can feel confident and ready to succeed.
Brandon,
This is key because no one likes a surprise when it comes to course requirements or expectations.

going over the course content with the students will leave them without any unexpected surprises.
Susan,
Yes, they do. Everyone needs to have a clear understanding of what the goals are and what they objectives are that will help them to achieve the goals.

I think students work best when they have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and what learning will be involved to get them to that point.
Michelle,
It is essential that every student understands what they course expectations are. With a clear and concise syllabus a major step has been taken in the communication of this information. From there it is a building process in terms of course expectations and performance.

A comprehensive and clear description gives the student a guide or roadmap of the course. Its lets the student know what is expected and when it is due. That way there is no surprises.
By having a comprehensive and clear description, students can see exactly what is expected of them, when everything is due, and will have a better grasp of the class. Students will experience much less frustration with the class and the instructor and will be more willing to learn.
It will also help the instructor to keep on track, as well as anyone else who may have to substitute the class. Students will continue to be on track and have a good learning experience in the class.
LaShonda,
This is such a great service to students. Clear and concise information about course requirements reduces frustration and anxiety on the part of students. They have the expectations and can work toward them.
