Everything is stated in the course syllabi, I also mention not to expect 100's, I test to find out what you do not know not necessarily what you already know. High expectations and nothing less.
I agree with you. I like to follow the saying see one do one teach one.
I am now using on-line tests in my classes. It helps to see who gets it and who is not.
Cameron,
Good way to keep the students informed and current. Sometimes I think students are like goldfish. It is said that goldfish have a memory that lasts approximately 2 seconds so the next time they swing by an object it is like it is the first time they have ever seen it before. Well I have found that students are much like that. I put it in the syllabus, I announce it and yet on due day they want to know why I didn't tell them in advance about whatever is due. So keep up the reminders and this way you can hold them accountable on the due date.

I give a detailed syllabus and outline with very clear stated expectations. I also re-emphasize weekly expectations on the Monday of that week. This leaves no "guessing" on the students part.
Gina,
So true. It is essential as a directional document. It shows the students the expectations, polices, and requirements of the course so they can refer to it throughout the course and know they are heading the right direction.

I discuss with them the reason why they are in school and what my goal is to give them the best knowledge in the course so they can put it to use in the field once they are done with school
Besides going over the requirements and expectation a role-play involves the student to put in practice what they just perceived and provokes the understanding process.
A detailed syllabus is important in establishing the expectations of a class. Also, allowing students to ask questions and feel comfortable in approaching the instructor can create a proper tone of the classroom, while also establishing what the instructor expects form students.
Patrick,
I use role playing in my classes as well. I find the students really get involved in the assigned roles and apply their newly acquired knowledge. Has this been your experience as well?

Highlight the course goals in such a way that the students will be able to see the expected outcomes of the course. Discuss the tests, papers, projects, and other assignments that will be required for the course.
I like to role play in order to have my student play the role of teacher and explain to the class the different thecniques available.
I find this very useful, and create a create learning environement.
Thank you Patrick
Ruby,
The syllabus is a connecting and communication device between the instructor and the students. It must be clear and concise so the students will understand the expectations, requirements and policies under which they will operate.

A syllubus makes the class expectations clear, having lesson plans, policies and procedures all all good to have. At the end of the day I would say a clear syllabus and a lesson plan will make it clear for the students.
Christopher,
Good plan and I like the use of homework right of front as an assessment tool. The next day tells you a lot about each student depending on how they respond to the assignment. This gives you a baseline from which you can determine how to interact with and provide support to the students.

The method I use to set a foundation of what I expect from students is set on the very first day of class. I detail in full what I expect in class and from assignments. I usually assign a minor special project due the next day just to assess the compliance of each individual student.
LaTunija,
I thin this is a great way to reinforce the skills students need to develop while in their externship. The more role play examples you can give them the more they will be able to see application of what they are learning and doing.

Patricia,
Good idea. I use a pretest so I can establish a knowledge baseline with the current group of students. Then I can customize how I approach the class and make sure I am targeting their learning needs.

Hello Dr. Gary
I like to do role play with my students. Because I'm not in the classroom on a daily basis I need them to know that externship is serious. I tell them their attitude will make them or break them. We role play on certain situation that can and will happen while on externship.
