TEACHING STYLES
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR AN INSTRUCTOR TO HAVE THEIR OWN STYLE... STUDENTS SEEM TO ADAPT EASIER TO THE COURSE BEING TAUGHT.
In an business college environment it is important for the instructor to attempt to understand the where the student is in their process of returning to the learning environment. From there the instructor must establish a teaching style that attempts to engage the student\class body as a whole and continue to move them forward in their learning process.
Hi John,
Right you are. You have to play to your personality and this will help you to be "human" in the eyes of your students. The human aspect of teaching is what contributes to rapport and respect development.
Gary
It also helps to be less formal at times to show that you share in their humanity. Your classroom should refelct your personality.
I agree, it is hard to follow someone's power points for example. You want to be "natural" when you lecture and this helps engage the students to assimilate the content.
Hi Jaffee,
You are doing a great job of being a student centered instructor. By making the needed adjustments when you "read" the needs of the class that was not responding as the other classes had you were displaying a sense of professionalism that is critical for instructors of excellence. Keep up the good work.
Gary
I agree. I know I definitely have a style which tires to incorporate as many of my students as possible to ensure that they grasp the material being presented.
I try to layer as many delivery methods as possible to allow academic growth for as many as possible; however, when I see that one or all of them is having difficulty, I will change my delivery method.
I noticed while teaching one lesson that a class was having difficulty grasping the material while two previous classes did not have trouble with the same presentation. This forced me to change my delivery method.
Hi Ernestina,
Great compliment to your teaching style. You are educating your students while giving them examples of how they can conduct themselves in the field. Keep up the great work you are doing.
Gary
I find this to be very true. Students often respond with; I like the way you lecture/explain things to the class, it keeps us alert and wanting to ask questions. Which makes me very comfortable being myself.
Hi Diane,
Exactly. You have to project your personality and the educational persona you are going use while in the classroom. By being you your students will see your abilities and skills as you demonstrate and lecture to them.
Gary
This is true, your own personality dictates your own style. Trying to teach using someone else's style could come across as phoney and the students would pick up on that and lose interest.
