I find powerpoints to be extremely helpful. As a student I can remember being very thankful if my instructor taught using ppt. Its easy to read and absorb. Its also a great way to get creative as an instructor.
I think photos make the powerpoints more relevant and interesting to the students. It also helps to keep their attention, in my opinion. Otherwise, it can become just one long lecture to them.

I use all kinds of different formats with PP. I use photos, graphics, color and stylized format. The key is to put on the screen content that captures and holds their attention.
