Restating the Text and Dialog Technique

One method is for the instructor to mark key words in the text and develop the ability to glance at a page section and put it in his/her own words. Some "reading dominant" instructors are even able to do this without marking the text or can mark it as they go through it.

This allows the instructor to "translate" the text into simplified language. This makes it more conversational. The instructor can also ask questions such as: Isn't that really what it means?" This gives the students the opportunity to speak up and agree or ask a question in a more conversational way.

Another method is to use a video with many "bullet" points. The instructor can freeze the DVD at the points and discuss them with the class. They can be restated--put in other words--as well.

One of the methods I have come to use is very old-fashioned. It is simply reading the chapter allowed. I have found for career college students, due to the condensing of the course materials, this is particularly helpful. It is time-consuming and some students don't care for it, but it has helped a number of my students to continue on in their career goals. I interject tidbits of information that is not in the book as I read as well. I also use technology, NetSupport School, and remote access the students desktop so as to keep the focus on the material and not on surfing the web.

Hi David,
Thanks for sharing these strategies with us. I know they will be of help to instructors as they decide on instructional deliveries for their courses.
