mini lecture

I use this tool quite often when I sense that the students in my classroom have encountered similar problems and can identify with the content and each other.

thanks a lot, since I am going to be assigned 5 hr periods, I was thinking of how to keep the students engaged so they do not get tired and keep focused

Hi Laila,
You do segments. Do a 15-20 lecture, have a discussion, then go to another 15-20 lecture then have a group activity, etc.. What you are doing is providing variety in the delivery process. By breaking it up you give a bit of relief to the students as well as let them apply what they have just heard through discussion and/or an activity. Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is the phrase that applies here. This approach will accelerate the learning process while keeping the students engaged.

how would this work when we have a lot of material to cover?

This sounds like a great way to make sure students really understand what you're lecturing. I'm going to start incorporating it in my classes.

Hi Thomas,
Great story. Thanks for sharing it with us. This would have been a great time lapse photography example of seeing the student dissolve into their seats. This experience was that really helped you to develop as an instructor but as you say you never want to go through it again.

I had to give a 5 hour lecture once. I was following a plan from another instructor and I haven't taught the class before. That was probably the funniest experience teaching I ever had. I watched my student's faces grew longer and longer as they gradually slumped into their seats til their hands were resting on the desks. I vowed never to do that again! Trial and Error :)

I will incorporate this inot my daily lectures. Great idea!!

I REALLY like this idea. I'm a little ashamed that I had not heard of it before and cannot wait o incorporate it in the classroom!

I think this is a great way to utilize getting in sudents to want to particpate in all of their classwork.

Sometimes it's hard to do when you have a two-hour class to fill and you're teaching composition. Writing and group assignments only take so long. I try to encourage questions and discussions, but it doesn't always work. I suppose alternating mini-lectures and activities may be a solution. What does everyone else think?

I did forget that we only have an attention span of 15-20 mins avearage. I will definitely space out and use interval lectures and demonstration

This sounds like a great idea to avoid overwhelming the students.
