Making first impression

Making a good first impression

Making a good first impression is very important for instructors to convey to the class. First impressions would keep studens attentive and interested.

I did this too. Pictures of my co workers and me doing our jobs. It really got the ball rolling for more discussions about the field.

one only gets one opportunity to make that first impression. it had better be a good one!

Getting the students involved as soon as possible in conversation usually opens up the room, brings us more comfortable right away, and shows that their opinion is valued. I like to do this by asking what experiences they have had with the material in the past as I go through what will be expected in the class

Great idea...using visuals, to show what you've done, professionally, that qualifies you to teach the course. Unfortunately, as I did mental health therapy/counseling, due to confidentiality, I cannot do that, but- I do share stories (without names, of course) of past cases. I get a lot of questions, and it opens up some nice discussions. Keep up the good, creative work!

I think so too. I am fortunate to be teaching what I did in the field for years. My first day, I use visual aids to show the students what I did. They seem more eager to learn knowing that you aren't just teach from a book.
