Powerpoints
I feel that PowerPoint lectures are the student’s gold mine of information. When I preset a PowerPoint lecture, I always give the students a copy of the lecture that has fill in the blanks spots so that the students keep their attention. It all falls back on the old teaching styles, see, hear, touch and do. With PowerPoint presentations you give the students a chance to meet all of their learning styles. I have received fee back from my Dean that my classes quiz and test scores are above regular for the class size. So, I support and defend PowerPoint lectures.
Very well said. I agree with your approach.
i will make change the my next pp
thank you for some great ideas
James, I agree. However, I've started to email the students the powerpoint presentations in advance to the class. All of my classes now request that I do this. That way they have a chance to review the major points that will be covered in the class.
This is one of the best ideas that I have heard. I think that I will implement it.
Hi William,
Thanks for sharing your method with us. This is a great way for new instructors to see how to use PP effectively while keeping the class moving forward.

As a first time instructor I find that Powerpoints are very valuable to me. Instead of reading the keypoints from the slide, I use the "note" feature to remind me of any keypoints I want to discuss, along with a page number for reference.
I print then print the powerpoints in the note format and place them in a binder. It really is much easier than trying to juggle a textbook, reference guide and notes.
Power points are good for adult learners, since the adults attention span is only 12-15 minutes.Power points are awesome because the adult leaners are getting the opportunity to use different learning styles visual, auditory and written styles.
Powerpoints are great for visual learners to see and hear the outline and the points made during lecture- it also gives you a guide so you know where to go and dont have to read off cards or straight from the text
Thats ar great idea. Thanks for the help! Hope teaching is going great for you.
Hi James,
The effectiveness of PowerPoint lectures depends on how the instructor uses them. Your method is engaging and has the students involved in following along and writing their notes in the columns along side of the slides. This is mixed involvement as you mention and effective. I use this same approach with my classes.
The place where PP becomes a negative is when an instructor loads each slide with text and reads it word for word. Many of us have had such instructors in our past and couldn't wait until the course was over because we thought we would die from boredom.
There are many ways PP can be used to be dynamic, exciting and effective when teachers like yourself plan and implement engaging PPs. Keep up the good work.
