when is it okay to give a student advising for dress code? should it be after after one warning? should there not be a warning?

Good way to make your policies clear. They have read them and been tested over them. This reduces any misunderstanding about how the course is going to operate.

I give advisings after the first class. I have developed a policy quiz that I have the class take and sign so that they understand the polcies from day one. There is no excuse to be out of dresscode after that.

I like to give second chances to everyone. I am a softy but I hold to my standards concerning the course and meeting the requirements. I would give a warning privately and indicate exactly what is or is not appropriate with the dress issue. I know you have already covered it in the introduction part of the course but it bears repeating once again. Then if it happens again consequences start to kick in.
