Note taking with Powerpoint Handout
Hi All,
My students want me (to point of demanding) to print out my Powerpoint as handouts. However, I have noticed that several of them don't seem to take notes ("it's all right there").
Any suggestions? I do try to add additional points not on the sides.
I agree with this style of pp: use it as an outline and let them take the notes they feel they will need for the test.
you all make good points. Power point can be an outline or a crutch. I find that most PP presentations are more accurate than the notes (they are printed out by the lecture source, such as the dental convention) and come out in a different order, so they lose some of their appeal. The PP may be so new that there is not time to print them out and copy all of them, so having them for the student to print out is good. It must be at least a day or two in advance, so they can do it at home where the cost is less.
I only use PP as an outline to my lecture. That encourages students to take notes with the pp
Hi Karen,
I can really appreciate your situation. Keep in mind that you do not have to provide them with PP prior to the class presentation. You can tell them that your policy is to provide them after the lecture so you can keep them engaged in the learning and discussion process. Even if they demand the PP it is still your right as the instructor to set the format for instructional delivery. You might want to give them guided notes that they can follow the PP with. I have found this method enables me to put together PPs just before class, yet they have the guided notes in their hands upon which they can take additional notes or not but they do have the key parts of the lecture to follow as they view the slides.

Since I am new to teaching the course, I am often working on the PPs up until ~ 10-15 minutes before the lecture. I am willing to put my PPs on Blackboard, but currently cannot guarantee that they will be up 1 hr before class so that they can be printed out BEFORE class.
For me, I was surprised that the students were so aggressive that I MUST give them print outs (knowing that the PP would be available). Then if I did print them out, that they were so passive (arms crossed) about note taking. Since I do not want to reward either behavior, I am not enthusiastic about giving them the print outs.
I aggree that only they can learn the material.
Thank you for your response. -Karen
Hi Karen,
I provide my students with my PPs via Blackboard. They can print out the PPs if they want to follow along on them as we move through the course. This way it is up to them to print them out. I do this to get some commitment and effort from them. I have the PPs document set up in the 3 slide per page format with note lines on the side. Then I offer additional content directly related to the slide but not a repeat of the slide itself. This gets the students involved in note taking and if not then it is up to them to secure the content somehow. I want some ownership for learning coming from them. I will support them but only they can learn the material.
