Students attention.

Sorry, Textbooks are by nature, boring and tedious. If an instructor wants to keep the students attention, then they must relate the subject to the real world. The world that the students live in, not the world that an instructor has read about in a book.

I find text books a lot more interesting and engaging of my time than listening to someone. I would try to keep in mind that that, too, is a learning style. I think that independent learners and students with high learning capacities are often stagnant as other students are entertained endlessly as though their "hands-on" or "visual" learning style means that they can't be expected to learn any other way.

People need to read. People need to listen. People need to apply. If you don't like the text book or appealing to read/write learners a) they'll know and b) they will share your opinion and begin to drift.
