Teaching Styles

I would like to see more indepth analysis of teaching styles in this course.

Hi Wendy,
This is always a challenge when making the transition from theory to application. We find that we lose students at this point because they cannot seem to coordinate both aspects of the career. We do our best to help those students to see this early in their careers and get them relocated to a career area in which they can excel and not waste their time and money.

Hi Dr. Meers,
Tactile learning is a must in most health education classes. It is very frustrating as a teacher when students are not able to apply theory to technical/skills. Some students excel in theory often making A's on written exams but struggle in the techincal area. For this reason, it is difficult to find that balance and many times I am left with the difficult decision of whether or not the student's technical skills will ever measure up to the standard entry-level perfomance needed in the field.

Hi Jennifer,
There are a couple of ways that will help you to identify your teaching style. One, is by looking at your own learning preference, is it visual, auditory, tactile, or written word? Or, a combination of the above? Then ask yourself how are you most comfortable in presenting? As you are sharing content do you use visual support, or more straight lecture, etc.? Once you know this you then can plan your instruction around a combination of the four categories and see how effective you are in delivery the content and gauge student reaction to your delivery. This will give you a much clearer picture of what instructional style you are using.

Thank you, I will definately check them out. I am just wondering what style I naturally teach to and how I can benefit from adopting some other styles, how to do that without seeming 'fake' etc I appreciate the feedback and will review the other courses.

Hi Jennifer,
You might want to look at ED 104-105-106-108. Those courses go more in-depth about instructional styles. ED 101 as you can see is a general introduction to teaching.
If you have any specific questions about instructional styles I will be glad to answer them for you. Just let me know.
