Different Teaching Styles that are ideal for At Risk Students
Please provide tip and tricks for teaching At Risk Students.
In teaching an at risk student, it is important to realize that for the most part, the student is irrationally scared to fail. Therefore, instead of falling down, getting up again, wiping the dust off, and heading back into the fray, they would rather run away. Confrontation would only serve to sever this student from active learning. By asking the student to present their point of view, without causing chaos, and allow them to express their understanding in their own understanding, with nurture and guidance enables the student to see the class and instructor in a different light.. one of support and guidance, not one of an authoritarian dictator... additionally, matched groups, with open discussions on a particular subject, in controlled manners, will often allow a student to present more facets of their understanding.. all the while the instructor standing by and being a facilitator and often mediator of the discussions. Additionally, see that when the at risk student does answer correctly, or sees something in the same way as you do, but communicates this in a more colorful manner than yourself.. dont be afraid to praise the thought or idea shared, and see the at risk become more engaged, less argumentative, less scared and more motivated to learn as a result.
