I have a military student in my class that look bored every class. I have tried everything, Any advice?
I agree, by breaking up your lecture and having a conversation with several students, it shows everyone in class that you are approachable and they will feel more comfortable approaching you in the future.
Try speaking to the student before class, break time or after class to see what can we work on together to help motivate him.
Hi Sandra,
Thank you for sharing this story. There are times that despite everything you do the student will not respond since he/she is not engaged in the learning process due to outside factors. By knowing this information you can do just as you say and concentrate those students that want to learn and achieve their career goals.

Hi LeTisha,
Have you talked with him/her about the class and the attitude being displayed. Often talking with such student and asking for their help in making the course more appealing will be enough to get them engaged.

Speaking to the student casually before or after class is a great idea. Also, when I faced a similar situation I spoke with the Student Services personnel in confidence, primarily because my student was always late to class and did very little work. It turned out that he behaved the same way in all of his classes because he didn't want to be in school at all, but was there to "please" his family. This knowledge helped me to deal with the situation; it gave me confidence to focus on his problems instead of my inadequacies as a teacher.
Have you tried talking to them to find out what style of learner they are?
