never speak over your students' head

reality relations..they must relate to what you are teaching

I have found it is important to speak in terms they understand. If we use vocabulary they do not know or understand....we will lose their attention. I have been in classrooms where the instructor is using terms I did not understand - and I felt lost and insignificant. I always try to break down the terms for my needier students. This way everyone knows what is going on in the classroom....and there is a better chance for everyone to succeed.

I agree. It is imperative that our students can relate the course to something they already know, and as instructors this is why it is so important (no matter how time consuming it can be)that we get to know at least the basics of who our students are as individuals.
