Real life experiences
Has anyone else besides me used personal stories to get their point across in the classroom? I do all the time, I find that students like an instructor that they can relate to in some type of way.
I know exactly what you mean. There may be one or two students who just want to come to class, find out what the lesson is going to be, and who is constantly looking at the clock. I try to keep the real life experiences short and to the point. Not too personal, but always relating to business. The majority of the students appreciate a good story every now and again.
Using real life experiences not only peaks their interest and grabs their attention, it also adds credibility to the instructor who has been around long enough to know first hand and not just what the text says.
I prefer to share my personal experience with the class about my career in a healthcare. It helps the students to see relevancy on what they are studying.
I also tend to share my personal experiences with the class, but at the same time you have to know what boundaries not to cross.
I use personal experiences often to illustrate points in the classroom- my experience has been varied in terms of healthcare and I can draw on many topics. The students often give me feedback in testing when they give examples- they relate back to the classroom examples and discussion.
Hi Lashawnda,
Students as you know like to hear stories from instructors' careers and experiences. They really help the students to see application and relevancy to what they are studying.
