stories pertaining to the course
Keep all examples relevant to the course. Do not stray off unless the point of the story is relevant to what is being taught
Angela,
When I have this situation I put them into groups and they share their stories. This way the discussion is controlled and I can limit the time. Everybody gets to talk but we are not talking extensive class time to have everyone share their own story about the topic.
Gary
I agree that providing a story of a topic being discussed is helpful and real for the student, however where I run into an issues at, is then I have half of my class wanting to sharing stories and experiences that happen to them relating to a topic.
Hi Judy,
These types of stories have a real impact on students. They help them to see the connection between the course and the real world. I enjoyed your story about the patient. There is never a dull moment in the health care industry is there?
Gary
I TRY AND TELL THEM STORIES THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME AT MY WORK PLACE. I HAD A PATIENT THAT WOULD COME IN AND, TO GET HIS BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKED, HE WOULD ALWAYS GIVE ME THE INCORRECT ARM AND THEN MAKE FUN BECAUSE I HAD NOT REMEMBERED THAT ARE WS UNABLE FOR US TO USE. WHEN I TELL MY STUDENTS THEY ALWAYS ASK WHY HE DID THAT AND MY ONLY ANSWER WAS THAT HE WAS A GREAT KIDDER AN THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY UNTIL ONE DAY I DID NOT FOR GET, THEN IT WASN'T SO FUNNY HE JUST SAID I WAS FINALLY LEARNING TO DO MY JOB AFTER 20 YEARS. HE ALWAYS HAD A JOKE TO PLAY AND WHEN I TELL MY STUDENTS THEY CAN RELATE TO IT SOME OF THE TIME.
JUDY
I like to use stories in my teachings as well. However, when i do so it is always focused on things that I have experienced in my professional career and I think the students are much more likely to listen because it shows them that the information really does relate to the work place.

Hi Zita,
Students really like to hear stories about how things are in the real world as well as how their instructor coped with work challenges. This helps to make it have relevancy for them.
Gary
A lot of my students have informed me that they can often recall previous content related to relevant stories.
Hi Cory,
What do you use as a guide to keep from straying off the topic as you move through the course?
Thanks for your input on this.
