When you think they got it?
I get upset when I feel the students understand everything we went over, and then I hear them in the halls saying differently. I always ask them at the end of the class if there is any thing they need to over and didn't understand, and they no???
I think that is a great idea. I have the same problem when I ask if my class understands a concept. They all shake their heads, then do poorly on the exam. I will try the Murky Points!
Jacqueline I have come across the same issue. I feel that students are afraid to speak up about any confusion because they feel they are hindering the class. I had a professor who taught Cell Biology and she used a method called Murky Points. She would give us an index card at the end of lecture and ask us to write down a question over material that was difficult or confusing. She would then hold a mini review before the next lecture and answer all of our questions. Not only did it clear up individual confusion but it was a fantastic review for the rest of us. It has worked for me and it makes students more comfortable to voice their question without having to ask in front of the class.
