I think lectures must be trendy..
Teaching online always presents a challenge for lecturing. Online Instructors must discover and apply methods that engage students, beyond what they read - in an effort to have them demonstrate what they learn in another area of the course (module).
Socratic feedback always works, regardless if the lecture is your own, or per-planted.
Solution: You an also break the lecture (discussions) in to DB forums, to create mini lectures; which will also provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate, practically, what the lecture imparts.
