I have graduates come in as guest speakers, to discuss their success. We go on field trips to the local operating rooms. I try to incorperate hands- on with my lectures.
in lecture lab combos lecture of material for 20 min, showing students example, then having students practice, then adding in simpro for good measure
I THINK IT IS GREAT TO HAVE GUESS SPEAKERS IT KEEPS IT VERY INTERESTING IN THE CLASS ROOM AND KEEPS THE STUDENT INTERESTED IN THE CLASS
STAY FOCUSED ON THE SUBJECT U ARE TEACHING.
Hi Olakunle,
What has been some of your most successful strategies in keeping students engaged?
Gary
Hi Maryrose,
Students really like hearing these stories and thinking through them, don't they? The more examples we can give them the greater their application of course content is going to be.
Gary
Visual information, guest lecturers, discussion sessions
I pepper in my personal experiences. The stories that I share can lead to a mini case study. They get envolved with the conversation because everyone has an opinion.
Hi Andrea,
Good strategy. It is engaging and effective just as you mention plus it enables the students reinforce the knowledge that has been presented to them.

One of the best methods I found to keep students engaged throughout the class is a verbal and written question and answer segmental base on the lecture. This method not only reinforces the learning process but ensures full classroom participation. I also asked the students to site personal experiences in their answers and give examples base on current affair that is relatable.
I have found that hands on things or visuals peak thier interest which leads to better learning
I like this idea but have found it nearly impossible to implement effectively. In one class, I had a group of students do this for their team project, but their questions were such that the rest of the class couldn't answer them. They were either too specific, too incorrectly worded, or the students presenting were unsure of the correct answer themselves. Does anyone have any suggestions about the practicalities of devising such games? Thanks.
As a math teacher, I find it essential to have several opportunities within the class to practice the skill from the lecture.
Math is best taught as a lecture, but there is no reason that it can't be interesting by having problems that reinforce the learning.
It is often possible to make the problems career applicable or real life applicable in order to allow the student to make a relevant connection to their lives.
Hi Michelle,
What are the outcomes you are seeking from your field trips? How long are the blocks of time you have for these trips? How far away can the field trip sites be located? If you can share this information with me I will be glad to give some ideas on future field trips.
Gary
Tactile learning is often the most effective. Lecture, while necessary to impart information, is more difficult for students to follow. Hand out are always good, as well as having surprise guest speakers, or video examples. Making them want ot come back the next class is a high priority.
Please help me trouble shot some field trip ideas for Medical Assisting students, that would benefit them.
I like to use group activities for the students, they get a chance to change seats, gather together, possibly go to the library or computer room to research. Have them be the expert! Share with the class their examples.
Hi Tammara,
So true. This type of interaction leads to greater student investment in the learning process. They have to see the ROI for their time and money and being part of the learning process helps them to see that.
Gary
I try to keep what I say to a minimum. Many students have been trained from an early age that when teachers lecture, it’s time for them to zone out. Majority of people actually do not learn more from listening than they do from doing. As a result, the more doing that they participate in, the more learning will be accomplished. The more they learn, the more they will stay focused and engaged in the learning process
In my experience, group activites and laboratory assignments keep adult learner engage in class.
