It is important to offer a variety of instructional delivery methods in classes because people have different learning styles and one approach will not be effective with everyone in the class. Along with accommodating many styles, using a variety of instructional delivery methods will also help initiate and retain student interest with each session.
Hi David,
Right you are.
Gary
Simply, none of us learn in the same way. The more varied the delivery, the wider the reach to students. I am most in favor of having the student directly involved in the learning process, through question/answer, teaching the class their answer to an exercise of problem. If they can teach a concept to someone else, they must understand it themselves.
Learning styles aside...it's boring!
It is important to offer a varied instructional delivery because a class has many types of learners. You want to address all the different types of learning styles as you can in a session.
In traditional face-to-face classrooms, effective communication is achieved not only by the content of words, but also how the content is expressed such as the voice volume, and facial and body gestures. In online classrooms, the tone with which the words are written is one of the most important factors in effective communication. The tone in online communication can either promote an ideal setting where all participants can share their thoughts and learn from each other, or can result in an ineffective communication that can provoke potential offensive and unpleasant messages.
Variety keeps student attention whehter it be in one class or varied from class to class.
It is important to have a variety because every student has a different learning style.
To prevent boredom. Everyone learns differently so varying styles will give everyone a chance to see what works for them. Keeps students on their toes.
This is important to address all learning types and appeal to those who may have difficulty understanding.
I feel just as you have different topics, you should have different ways of delivering each one, also not every student response or picks things up the same way. releated to real life topics help keep students interactive and alert.
Everyone has different learning styles I have a student that records me daily.
Students learn differently and to be truly effective instructors should respect and honor those learning differences. Also, it keeps the studente more engaged when a variety of delivery is offered. They are more likely to absorb the content. Finally, it also keeps the instructor "fresh" so as not to become stale in their delivery.
Hi Charles,
Good way to bring the diverse experiences and backgrounds of your students into a working setting. I like the use of learning groups myself and use them frequently. They really help students to learn how to work with each other as well as to depend on each other. These are two attributes they are going to need when they are out in the work world.
Gary
People learn differently.
As we all have experienced, there are many different learning styles and in order for us to effectively include all our students in the learning process, we have to incorporate the various methods of deliveries in order to reach all of our students. One of the most effective ways that I've experenced is simply arranging the class into pods of four to six students. This enables the students to interact within their groups and gives me the opportunity to vary the method of delivery depending on the learning style of the group. Being part of the career college group, most of the students have a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to contribute to the learning process. With this base in place, building on and expanding the concepts and pratical applications is very beneficial and constructive. This base interaction within the student groups enhances the effectiveness of delivering the course subject to students with different learning styles.
We have a class of 18 - 20 students come in and work together 5 days a week for the entire year. They range in age from 18 to 60+ with a wide range of background and abilities.Variety in teaching and lecturing is very important in order to reach them all and keep them enthused about the program.
Hi Manuel,
How to you change your content from boring to challenging and engaging? Thanks in advance for your input on this.
Gary
This process avoids boredom among students. Offering various instructional delivery makes the class more exciting which serves as a main factor in getting students to listen. You don't like students to fall asleep in your class just because they got so tired with your methods of instruction. You want them to be actively involved in class.
Because of the diversity of students in a class it is effective if instructors are flexible and able to meet the needs of their students. It also helps engage the class and have fun learning.
