After lecture review

I have found that if student do a quick review after the lecture they retain about twice as much.

James,
Good strategy. You get student participation and you are checking for understanding at both ends of the class. A win win situation for your students.

AGREE. I like to try and conduct two distinct reviews in each class session. One on the front, listing things on the board as "bullet points" summarizing "What We've Learned Thus Far" (or from previous class meeting), then a "Sprint Review" at the END, where I set my watch and do rapid-fire Q&A to each student on what we covered in the current session, about one question per student, with the goal of wrapping it up in 2-3 minutes. (I am fortunate: My class sizes are 8-20 students, so this is doable).

This is very useful and effective in helping to keep the students focused. When they know there will be a post-lecture review, they are more likely to be engaged throughout the lecture.

I do as well. One thing that I like to do is end the lecture by having a couple of discussion questions for them to consider and talk about as a class that relate to the material we just covered.
