Ensuring that students are following you
I think that it is important to ask questions relevent to the content you are teaching at different intervals throughout your lecture. Watching the facial expressions of your students will allow you to pinpoint who you may need to ask questions to. This will ensure understanding of the material.
Instead of asking "Does anyone have any questions?", I try to use other questions either specific to the topic or by asking "Does this make sense?"
Sara,
You make a good point about the challenges of dealing with diverse learning abilities in classes. The fact is as you mention you can't reach them all but by putting forth a dedicated effort you can say as you walk out the classroom door at the end of class I did do my professional best to reach them.

This can be very challenging when you have a a larger class with a wide range of baseline knowledge. I struggle with a couple students regularly because of their difficulty grasping concepts from the lecture I deliver. I try very hard to implement other learning styles however it has been difficult when interactivly disscussing the lecture content to have those students who struggle to catch up and be on the same page. I hope that I find ways to assist them with out causing them any hummiliation, negative feelings or isolation. Also I must find a way to help the other classmates be tolerant, less frustrated and annoyed with the students who arent learning at the same pace. I wish there was a way to deliver effectively for every student, though I'm realizing this may be an unrealistic goal as an instructor who is also human.
I teach math classes at a career college. I understand the "look" we get as teachers from the students. I may go over a similar problem to clarify the misconceptions. I then give guided practices and individual practices to check for comprehension. Practice make permament, true, but the student has to being doing the math problem correctly first.
I agree. Sometimes while lecturing I can see "the lost" stare, and it's clear to me that whatever I said, just went over their heads. But, it surprises me how no one will ask for clafification!
