Lecturing
I have found that students hate being read to - It makes tham feel that you do not know the material, and that they could just as easily be up front reading the slides. I always structure my lectures with the slides as reference materials, and I always make sure that I have good examples for the points I am teaching.
I have found that the students do better with a lecture if it is peppered with questions, making lists on the board and giving them a prepared outline for the lecture.
When using powerpoint presentations, I always give examples and real work scenarios that incorporate the material. Students often tell me that they remember the information as it relates to the example/story.
I agree, I want to use the slides but also add to them with other more helpful material, Like labeled photos,or a video. Something that gets there attention rather than reading the slides. I just have to make sure that the material I use stays on topic to what I want them to learn.
