learning student names

getting to know each student my their name and their paticular learning abilities

Kevin,
Thanks for sharing your name learning strategy with us. Learning names quickly is essential for instructors so the more strategies we have to chose from the more options we can select from to get the names down.

Gary Meers, Ed.D.

Learning names is vital for to develop a connection with my class. I feel that they feel more connected to me as an instructor when I do this. This term I am teaching five classes with two of them having twenty plus students. I have surprised myself over the past couple of weeks in that I have already learned everyone's names. I achieve this by having a variety of tasks that cause me prompts. One is having them go in front of the class, introduce themselves and talk about their projects. Another is when I give quizzes, I pay attention to who hands it into me and glance at their names. Each of us has our best process for name recognition. The important thing is that we do it because it gives the class more authenticity in terms of an experience.

This is so true. I like to call on them in class, asking them to state their name. Soon I can remember names and can place it with the correct student. Everyone needs to feel that they are part of the group.

Learning students names make them feel as if they are truly apart of the learning process and not just another face.

Matthew,
It is always good to hear about strategies that work for instructors. Your name remembering is a valuable way to get students engaged in the course and settled into learning the learning process.
