Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle

I have enjoyed mixing things up in the past: begin with a simple lecture that turns completely different. I have a "planned" lecture, complete with powerpoint slides that I just stop in the middle of...and immediately start an "impromptu" activity instead. The whole plan was to do the activity all along, but the learners don't know that. They will often wonder what is next, and stay focused for a longer amount of time in the future.

Stephanie,
I do this with my classes when I feel they are starting to disengage on me. We have fun, share some laughs and then get back to the content. When we return to the content the energy level is higher and the excitement for learning has increased.

I really like that idea! Taking a break from lecture and doing a fun, unexpected activity fills the room with positive energy and helps students feel more focused when you go back to the lecture!

Mike,
I am big fan of humor and use it often in my classes. Students really like to share a funny picture or example. As you know it breaks up the flow of the class and lets them relax their brains a bit while still staying on target.

I like to slide a funny clip from you tube or a funny picture that expresses the point I am making in my presentation as often as I can. It lightens the mood and gives my students a mental break.

Great idea, Clint. To a lesser degree, I try to use the same techniques to keep the interest. Plenty of stories from the field also seem to help hold attention.

Clint,
I like your style. One of the key parts of effective teaching is change of pace and variety. You are giving your students such through your change of flow in delivery and introduction of new learning opportunities. Keep up the good work.

That is a fantastic idea. Similarly, I like to mix in active "Brain Gym" activities or quick motor and social breaks to re-energize the students and maintain their focus.
