A class filled with multiple types of learners...

How would a science professor successful lecture on the bones of the body in class made up of various learning styles?

Brian,
Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are offering both in your approach and as you have experienced the students stay engaged for the duration of the sessions.

I think it would depend on the level of the student, but, regardless... A combination of talking lecture, AV demonstration (slides, videos, graphics), physical models, and even basic kinesthetic demo if appropriate.

Brenda,
I use this method as well and it is very effective in terms of student engagement and focus. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us.

I also use mini lectures in my classroom and then either break the class into groups for activities, give a written assignment or show relevant documentaries. It seems to keep the students attention better.

Ositadinma,

What I like to do in my class is give a mini lecture and overview of what we are going to do in class today. Then send off to production, as I spot problems or mistakes, I fix it, then make a general announcement of the mistakes being made and different approaches that can be taken to achieve results.

Jose,
In classes like this I use learning groups. I create cohort learning groups and work with them while students that are at other levels in the course are working in their groups. I rotate through the groups. I pull the entire class together when I am going to share content that is common for everyone.

My question is, what is the best method of teaching a class that has open enrollment and the students are at different levels of the course?

Aki,
Good ways to appeal to the different learning preferences of your students.

Dr. Ositadinma,
Use mini-lectures of 15-20 minutes and then do an activity where they use the content they have just covered. This way the different learning styles are used to reinforce what has just been taught. After a few minutes (approximately 5-7) you go back to another lecture segment so you are offering variety in your delivery. Also, use a lot of graphics, visuals and examples to reinforce the different learning styles.

Use a model skeleton that is complete and have a disabled skeleton and allow the students to place the bones in the correct order. Use Overhead projections of different joint structures and proper movement of joints as a reference. Lecture the importance and function of the different types of bones.
