Keeping Students Engaged

I learned some key things I will for sure bring to the classroom

Mary,
As you know students really like to hear stories from their instructors about the field they are studying. These stories help to make the content real and engaging.

Breaking up the class with interesting stories that the instructor has experienced can help the students stay focused. It breaks up the monotony, but also teaches them at the same time.

Charles,
First off I love your quote. A new one to me but I can really relate to it since a number of my mistakes were not new I just made them over again. Trying to get better at this but not sure I am. Also, students as you know like hearing about our careers so when you introduce your mistakes as they apply to the content being discussed they really connect with what is being said. Good strategy to use.

Many times I wil tell students of mistakes I have made in my own career while the content of the lesson is relivant. I try to let them know how I benefitted from that mistake and went on to more sucessful outcomes. One of my favorite quotes is " If you must make mistakes, Try to make a new one each time."

I have learned that if you talk about things that you have done or how you have learned, the students will look at you as more of an educator and not as someone who is above them. keep yourself on there level and not to put information over their heads so they can understand it. this is so true with adult learners. they do not want to feel stupid, but want to learn the information.

Rashanda,
Great to hear. I wish you continued teaching success.
