Keeping the students reading

How can we get our students to read more? Student dont understand what they are reading. So when you give a test on something they had to read they dont pass.

Justin,
It is at times like this you can show the students the value of knowing the content in relation to solving a hands on problem. This way they will see the ROI of both content and skill development.

It seems that alot of the time student don't like to read our course content. Some have the fixed idea that they are here to only learn from hands on experiences. I like to explane to them that reading will only help them understand different processes better.

Cynthia,
This is an ongoing struggle for post secondary instructors, myself included. Some of my students are very poor readers and in a 15 week course I can't really help them much in terms of improving their reading skills. What I do is give the guided notes, structured outlines and handouts containing key concepts. I draw rectangles around key paragraphs in the handouts. All of these strategies are intended to help the students with poor reading skills to be able to pick up the key points. Some are able to do so and others I recommend they leave the class and go through the reading center improve their skills and then come back into the class.
