it is very important because some may be boring so you have to get creative so they stay involved
I have been working with a program called Voicethread. The program keeps the students engage by asking them to speak, read, and write on different topics. Also other students can comment verbally, they can draw, and write on other students work. The program also allows me to moderate for any misuse which is wonderful.

There have been a number of studies researching this question and the common time frame is around 30 minutes before they need some type of mental break such as a Q&A session or a case study to work on.
