Keeping them engaged
Im a big fan of short lectures. You can see it when they start to drift away. Being long winded is means I'm not keeping up with there needs. I have to step back sometimes.

Thanks for sharing the successful strategy with us. This reinforces that students like and need a change of pace at times to reflect and apply the information that has just been shared with them.

I agree. I have started lecturing on half of the chapter then having discussions and answering questions from students then continuing to the next half and doing review questions at the end with all students participating. Works great.

I am as well for the reasons you state. More learning occurs with short lectures and then discussion and/or application sessions and the results are more satisfied students.
