It's important to know the type of learning method that works for your students. You will have less frustration, both in them and you if you know this.
Norma,
Good point. How do you determine that with your student population?

Brian,
No shy students don't. They just prefer not to express themselves as much. By bringing them into each discussion you can get their thoughts and help make them comfortable in the class.

I agree with this, although not all shy students have difficulties understanding the information.
Hello Carla:
I am learning how to assess the student learning styles. Currently, I am able to recognize the auditory and visual but I sometimes have to read and learn from my peers how to properly blend the two styles in order to meet the needs in a positive, productive manner, I guess I too can say (along with my students), I am work in progress.
It's very important to know yours students because that will give you and idea of what kind of learning method you'll used. Knowing their different needs could help me approach them in a supportive way so they could feel part of the group and drive them to succeed.
This not only encourages the shy students, but this also allows the instructor to determine who is not quite understanding the information.
Deborah,
This is something very important for instructors to do. Shy students need to be drawn out in a comfortable and supportive way so they see the value they have in the course.

I agree I try to encourage the quite shy students. Sometimes it takes a couple days but more often then not they come around.
need to find a way to get all students involved, I dont' let the same student go first in every activity.
Charles,
This is such an important part of teaching. You are making a connection with the students through your caring about your students and getting to know why they are in the class and what their career goals are. This helps them to see that through hard work they can be successful in the class and move closer to their career goals.

When you know your students and work to make sure they know the material, it shows them they are valued and you care about their success.
You have to be able to switch styles quickly do to the different ways the students learn.
