Creating Lesson Plans
Found the information on creating lesson plans to be very insightful. Was especially impressed with ways to focus on content and providing appropriate rationales for students.
Everett,
Not sure you do in the purest form. With all of the resources you have I would think an outline with any specific points you want to make would be sufficient. A lesson plan is just that a plan so it should include what you need to implement your instructional plan, be that quite complex or a simple outline. It is a professional judgement call on your part.

My difficulty with lesson plans is the actual physical creation of one. I know what information is provided in the text book, powerpoint, syllabus and course objectives; and I know the order that things are presented in the text and power point, so my real dilemma is: why do I NEED the lesson plan (if the lesson is more/less already planned) and what format would work the best for me as far as creating it.
Michael,
I think this is a very good idea and one worth mentioning to the lead instructor. Would help you to be on the same page in terms of objectives for the day.

I find lesson plans to be the backbone of the course. I also teach in a clinic setting and would prefer the main Professor for the clinic to have a huddle with the instructors as to the main lesson plan for the day. Perhaps even a handout/or e-mail to each professor before starting.
Paul,
Good plan because of your content area. You are right about the anxiety that comes with taking a math class. With varied applications and concise instructions students will be able to not only do the required problems but also develop an appreciation of the value of using math in their career area. We all use it so why not understand the application process fully and make it a part of our skill set?

In creating lesson plans and because I teach math to many students with fear-of-math anxieties, I need to keep my lesson plans very flexible because it is unpredictable where one of the students might become hung up on a particular problem being solved in the class. I may need to vary my delivery "on the fly" when I am faced with this situation.
Martha,
Glad to hear that you are going to be able to use the lesson plan format to keep the course on target and forward focused. The lesson plans serve as the blueprints from which we "build" of instructional delivery.

I thought the lesson plan took up too much of my time and didn't like making them. I know after a week of not making one I got behind. So now I truly understand the importance of them. This section encouraged me and made me see how and why we need them.
John,
Great to hear this information was helpful to you. I wish you continued teaching success.
