Sometimes, in order to keep the student engaged in the class, the instructor will need additional material, be it brochures, visual or simply stated from another student. The interactions with other materials definitely keeps the students involved and motivated.

I use supplemental materials a lot in my classes for the reasons you list. They bring relevancy to the classroom. Also, you can customize your class in relation to current events through supplemental materials.

I think this is very important. Textbooks are good for learning basic concepts, but the supplemental material help students to:
understand better those concepts.
see the application of those concepts.
obtain new information.
