A bad first impression can reduce the student's interest in the course.
First impressions really do last long! A positive first impression goes a long way in determining your experience with your students during and even after completion of the course.
First impressions allow students to see a model of their instructor and represent seriousness
Absolutely. They way the students first meet and receive the teacher sets the tone for the class
Mark,
So true and so important to establish you as the learning leader for the class.

i agree. This shows the students that being on time and that you are ready to show them what they are capable to do in that room.
You may not only be starting a new class, but the students will be meeting you for the first time. You may have taken over a class, or are filling in for a week or so. That first impression tells the students that you are serious about your profession and serious about them learning from your experiences.
I believe that the first impression sets the stage for whats to come. If you dont make a good first impression with confidence than your students will think they can run your class. This is particularly true of our student demographic.
It's important for the new students to get a "real feel" for you in a new class. Students need to feel comfortable, trusting, and not intimidated in the classroom setting. Also, there needs to be a sense of trust that is conveyed here as well. If the students don't trust that their instructor understands and knows the material they are presenting, that first impression is a very negative one.
First impressions are often lasting impressions!
Linh,
Well said for a beginning instructor. You have a very good understanding of how you want to conduct your class. A saying I use as I approach the class is that "courtesy is owed" (I the instructor will extend you courtesy.) "Respect is earned" (I will work to earn your respect just as you will need to work to earn my respect.) and "Rapport is established" (As we work together we will establish rapport with each other that enhances your professional growth.). Hope this say will be of help to you as you begin your career.

a positive first impression is important when starting a new class because you have to develop a good rapport with the students, in order for the to respect you as an instructor and authority in a whatever subject you are teaching. The instructor should seem likeable, but not too friendly with the students; and knowledgeable in the subject.
First impressions set the tone on the class.
It is very important to gain trust and respect from students in order to create a learning environment. Once you have set the policies and procedures in a professional manner students will look up to you and not at you.
Richard,
This is so important when it comes to managing the class and student behavior.

You want to convey to the students that you are in control and give them confedience in your ability to teach them.
Ann-Marie,
Tough to dig out of a negative hole. Why not start with a great first impression and move from there?

I feel that it is very important for that positive first impression. If you dont make a good first impression the students may not respect you as their instructor
first and lasting impressions are lasting
Pamela,
Yes, they will. This forms the foundation for the development of trust and respect.
